Making Your Own Candles

Collage_wuqtuw2_dkd0urztt1wpxq20141008-2-1ogacufjpg?1412823095

As a Lifestylist® I spend a lot of time designing products for the home, and candles are one of my favorites.

I really love making candles when I can. Sure you can find candles at a local store at cheap prices, but you are not able to control the scent strength that way and you don't get to experience the feeling of accomplishment that you get when you make them yourself.

Cotton Candy Candle

I thought I would share some links to some affordable, good quality candle making starter products for those thinking of getting into candle making. I highly encourage it!

Below is a super easy candle making recipe which I am happy to share. I also create wax tarts which is the same recipe, only you would pour the melted wax mixture in wax tart tins and set to cool and harden. I will add a how-to video to this post in the future.

Candle Making Recipe:

Supplies needed:

  • Soy candle wax (or a candle wax of your choice)
  • Tabbed Candle Wick(s)
  • Mason Jar(s)
  • Sauce Pan (filled about 1/4 of the way with water)
  • Candle Making Pouring Pot
  • Candle/ Candy Thermometer
  • Fragrance oil
  • Colored Candle Wax or Liquid Candle Dye (optional)

Before you begin, be sure you have the appropriate type and size wick(s) for the size and kind of candle(s) you are making. If you are using soy wax, for example, be sure your wick is suited to soy candles. If your mason jar is wide, make sure your wick is wide enough in diameter to burn optimally. In most craft stores where you can find these supplies, you can ask employees for recommendations on the packaging and what type and size wick you should use depending on your project (I have suggested some online products below).

Step 1: Begin melting your wax. Melt you soy wax in a double boiler using your saucepan and your candle making pouring pot. I planned to fill one 8 oz. mason jar, so I melted approximately 8 ounces of soy wax. I melted the wax on low to medium-low heat. Never leave melting wax unattended!

Step 2: While this is melting (and while you’re keeping an eye on your wax), secure your wick to the bottom of your mason jar. Apply your wick stickers to the center of your jar and press it centered in place.

Step 3: Arrange your tabbed wick so that it stands upright and use your centering tool to make sure that it is as centered as possible.

Step 4: When your wax is melted, allow it to cool a bit before adding in your colorants (if desired) and fragrances. Wax purchased in craft stores will typically come with a guide that recommends an ideal temperature for adding fragrances and colorants to your wax depending on the type of wax you’re using. For my wax, it was recommended to add in fragrance oil when the wax had reached between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. (This is because some fragrances can lose their scent when added to high-temperature liquids.)

If you purchased fragrance oil or colorants designed for candle making, it should come with guidelines as to how much of each to use given the volume of wax you are working with. I usually use one ounce of scent to 8 oz. of candle wax.

Step 5: Pour your wax into your mason jar and allow it to cool.

Step 6: When your wax has cooled completely, trim your wick to fit your jar.

And now you have a beautiful handcrafted scented mason jar candle that you can be proud of!

I have listed below some great places to buy candle making supplies. These are some items I have purchased in the past. I am listing them for your convenience. If you don't have the money to purchase all you need right away, I would recommend just buying one of the starter kits then slowly buying what you can until you have all you need to make more candles in the future.

LABELS FOR YOUR CANDLES

I created some Printable Candle Labels. Feel free to use it for your candles! You may need to purchase some sticker paper.

Natural Soy Wax 10lb Bag

Natural Soy Wax 10 Lb Bag

This is the kind of wax that I usually use for my candles. Soy wax does not burn if it spills on to skin so it is a lot safer, especially for children.

Natural Soy Wax Candle Making Kit

Natural Soy Wax Candle Making Kit

I highly recommend this kit. I have used it in the past because of the quality of the items included and because it is very affordable. It also has pretty much everything you would need to make your very first candles. You probably also want to purchase a candle thermometer along with this kit.

Natural Soy Wax Candle Making Kit - $24.36, 6.38 shipping - Available at Amazon.com Marketplace

Deluxe Candle Making Kit (Natural Soy Wax)

Here is a more costly alternative but as you can see, it has a lot more to offer (including the candle thermometer).

(Large) Square Braided Wick: 75 foot Spool

The kit above comes with pre-cut wicks but I usually purchase the braided cotton or hemp candle wick spools and candle tabs separately as well. I try not to use the zinc ones because I have heard that they are toxic. These are pretty good in my experience but test various wicks until you find one that you like.

Getting Organized for Your New Baby

Collage_4xaad9z05ssdzz4i3mookg20140621-2-1g9p0snjpg?1403392464

As a Lifestylist® we work with clients in every phase of their lives, and one of our favorite clients to work with is one that's expecting their first child.

Expecting a first child is a very exciting time and there is a lot to do to prepare for that new bundle of joy. Aside from picking a name, organizing the nursery is pretty high up on the list of things to do during the pregnancy.

When it comes to designing and organizing a nursery, don't focus on just the baby stage. Think beyond the first year, to when the child will be crawling, walking, growing and playing in the space. There are many pieces of furniture that are designed with this in mind; a crib that later converts to a bed, for example. Aside from a crib, a changing table is the next most important piece. A comfortable chair for feeding baby, a bureau and a toy box are other pieces to consider for the nursery.

Delta Childrens Glenwood 3 In 1 Espresso Convertible Sleigh Crib

This 3 In 1 Espresso Crib Is The Constant Sleeptime Companion For Your Baby

With the ability to convert from crib to toddler day bed the Delta children’s Glenwood sleigh crib will provide many nights of sound sleep to your baby for years to come. Kids will enjoy a familiar bed to come home to through their childhood years, every night. This bed is built with a solid wood construction that’s sturdy enough to hold up to older or more energetic kids, while being simple to put together for the busy parent.

After deciding on the big pieces of furniture, you should try to organize specific areas of the nursery. The changing table and crib will be the most used areas. When organizing the changing area, think through every step taken when changing your baby and the things that might be needed. Your baby should never ever be left alone for even a second on the changing table, so everything needs to be within arm's reach. A basket with things used consistently such as diaper rash cream, powder, and baby wipes will be the most useful right on top of the changing area. Onesies and diapers will also be used at every changing, so put them within easy reach as well.

The amount of laundry generated by such a tiny being is amazing, so be sure to have plenty of outfits, but don't forget the crib sheets, receiving blankets and burp cloths. A laundry hamper will be extremely helpful in this space.

Dwellstudio Savoy Glider Nursery Chair

Dwellstudio Savoy Glider Nursery Chair

If there is a chair in the nursery for feeding baby, be sure to have a small table next to it to hold a drink, the bottle while burping, a stack of burp cloths, a baby monitor and a small lamp. Middle of the night feedings will require some light, but not too much. It would be best to have a low watt bulb in that table lamp.

Summer Breeze 5 Drawer Chest

Summer Breeze 5 Drawer Chest

When it comes to organizing baby clothes there are several options to consider. You could store similar items together. For example, you could have a drawer just for onesies and another just for pajamas. Alternatively, you could organize clothes by size. Put entire outfits together by size and hang in a closet or put in the dresser or changing table. The way you organize your baby's clothes is completely up to you. Only you can decide what will work best for you and your family.

Handcrafted Toy Chest by Little Colorado Powder Blue - 055PB

Handcrafted Toy Chest by Little Colorado Powder Blue - 055PB

After all of the necessities are in the nursery, extra items can be added. A toy box would be a great idea, but it certainly isn't necessary to start with. Shelving for books and toys would also be nice, but needn't be a priority at this early stage.

There are many cute ideas out there to consider when organizing a nursery for the first baby. Look at different magazines and websites for ideas and take what works and leave what won't. Most of all enjoy the process!

Walking To Find a Cure For MS

I was shocked to find out a few years ago that a woman I always called my fairy godmother because of how much she had done for me and my career was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She really showed me the real New York City by sharing her friends, sources, restaurants and the other things that make New York such a special place.

Because Babette has never been a person to sit around and feel sorry for herself she started Team Hanky Paws to help raise money to find a cure for everyone afflicted with this disease. I got this form Babette today, and I hope that you will consider helping Babette and everyone else affected by MS.

Dear All,
Only 28 days to our Walk MS, I thought I’d tell you how team HANKY PAWS (the team, not the dog) was born…hoping I’d curry favor for a donation. If you can send $5 because it’s tax time (or whatever - no need to tell me) I’d be thrilled and grateful. So, I'll trade you a story for a donation:
I never had to tell my mother, but I couldn’t keep it my father, Hal. The only time I saw him cry tears of sadness was one time before, when Doris (our mother and his wife of 56 years) died. I dreaded his reaction - what had he done wrong? What had he done to me? It was horrible.
I’ve always felt it much harder on family and friends.
Hal was desperate to do something. He’d donate to The Society, but not a man of means, I decided we'd form an MS Walk Team. We walked 2 or 3 in NY, 1 in Rye Playland (see photo: L-R Valerie- our great friend from Croton who showed up to support HANKY PAWS, Tony Brown & Hal Holland holding Hank and Ruby).
This was the last MSWalk Hal went on.He still raced up and down the hills and had a wonderful time.
He passed away the following year and I couldn't walk without him, my heart broken, for a while after that. Now I also Walk because of him. Yesterday was his birthday and someday I hope to tell him on his birthday that HANKY PAWS is out of business - that they’ve found the Cure for MS.
I’m writing as I hope those of you who have donated before will do so again - $5.00 , $10, $20 -or whatever you can. Those that never have, that this will be your year to send $5.00 or more
For a tax deductible donation, please click below:

If you cannot help at all, consider telling someone else about HANKY PAWS by posting our links anywhere, if you can. Everyone knows someone living with Multiple Sclerosis.
Thank you so much. Hope you’re all doing and feeling very well.
I’m so grateful and I know that Hal would be, too.
With love and great thanks,
Babette, Tony, Nancy, Ibo, Hank and Ruby
